Citizenship test update

Aspeq selected for the NZ citizenship test.

The Government has selected Aspeq Limited to administer the in-person test. Here’s what this step means for people preparing for citizenship.

01 · The announcement

A provider has been chosen.

Aspeq will work with the Department of Internal Affairs to design the service for booking, payment and test delivery across New Zealand.

The selection is a step in the design phase. The test is still planned to become part of the citizenship by grant process from late 2027.

02 · For applicants

The timing remains late 2027.

Most people applying for citizenship by grant after the test becomes a requirement will need to pass it. If you have already applied, or apply before it becomes a requirement, you will not need to sit the test.

You still need to meet the citizenship eligibility requirements when you apply. This announcement does not change those requirements.
